Daimler Trucks will soon delight us with an excellent vehicle called the 2015 Freightliner Inspiration Truck. This will be the very first autonomous truck in the U.S. The 2015 Freightliner Inspiration Truck has finally been granted a license for road use on the roads of Nevada, so the company will be able to check its systems and abilities for self-driving on the highway. The company claims that the vehicle is designed to reduce the stress on long-haul drivers and to reduce traffic jams. Of course, the company made sure to design a truck that will ensure excellent fuel efficiency primarily because of computer-controlled driving. Just to make clear that this vehicle won’t be a replacement for drivers, because computer-controlled driving is relegated to highway use, while drivers will drive on their own on rural and urban roads.
2015 Freightliner Inspiration Truck Technology
Most of the technology of the 2015 Freightliner Inspiration Truck can be on the outside. A radar unit is placed within the gap between the grille and the bumper. Using two sets of sensors, this radar monitors the road in front of the vehicle. The sensors are short-range and long-range. The long-range sensor is monitoring traffic 820 feet in narrow, eighteen-degree field of view, while the second one is monitoring 230 feet ahead of truck and 130-degree field of view. This system has the Adaptive Cruise Control part of the autonomous system. This system is similar to the one we have in the Freightliner Cascadia Evolution.
A stereo camera placed behind the windshield monitors the road which is 328 feet in front of the truck. The camera reads speed limit signs, communicates with the steering of the vehicle to keep the vehicle within the traffic lane and reads pavement markings. Simply put, the Highway Pilot system actually utilizes the stereo camera and the Adaptive Cruise Control for autonomously driving of the vehicle. Once the vehicle is on highway, the system informs the driver that the Highway Pilot is ready for using, but the driver himself is still in charge of the system.
The exterior design of the 2015 Freightliner Inspiration Truck can be described as sleek and extraordinary with plenty of design details that make it even more appealing. The front fascia of the car has a low-riding bumper, newly designed integrated headlights and narrow grille openings. A recognizable cabin of the Freightliner Cascadia Evolution lies behind the newly designed hood. The carmaker wanted to reduce aerodynamic drag so they added long skirts over the rear wheels of the vehicle and over the fuel tanks. Probably the coolest thing about the exterior design of the 2015 Freightliner Inspiration Truck is the lights. The LED lights glow blue during the autonomous driving, while during conventional driving, the lights glow yellow and white.
When you peek inside of the cabin of the 2015 Freightliner Inspiration Truck, you will notice that its interior looks like a swanky RV rather than a commercial truck. The seats are wrapped in white leather with French stitching just like the much of the space of the cabin. There are also Hardwood planks which line the floor. You will enjoy a really comfortable driving in the cabin of the newcomer because it is spacious and luxurious at the same time.
The 2015 Freightliner Inspiration Truck will be powered by a Detroit Diesel DD15, inline six-cylinder turbodiesel which displaces 14.8-liters. It arrives in various tunes and it delivers up to 505 horses and 1,750 lb-ft of torque. The powertrain utilizes the Mercedes’ BlueTec aftertreatment system which helps it to reduce exhaust emissions. The engine is coupled to the Detroit DT12 Automated Manual Transmission with 12 forward speeds.
Price of 2015 Freightliner Inspiration Truck
